More charges laid against sex assault suspect
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has laid more charges against a man in connection with a series of sexual assaults in St. John's.
Sofyan Boalag, 33, was arrested in December, accused of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman in the downtown area of St. John's.
At the time, police said they had reason to believe Boalag might be responsible for several similar attacks.
On Friday, he was charged in connection with two more incidents.
Boalag is accused of sexually assaulting a girl along LeMarchant Road in the early-morning hours of Sept. 29. He's also accused of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman in the area of Bonaventure Avenue in the early hours of Dec. 1. In that case, Boalag was allegedly armed with a knife.
He faces numerous charges, including sexual interference, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and robbery with violence.
Const. Pamela Pike said these cases were suspected in the fall of 2012 being related to Boalag.
"These two incidents that we're referring to, they were discussed or were included in the initial numbers that were discussed back in the fall, and obviously the investigation is still ongoing," said Pike.
Boalag was expected to appear in court Friday afternoon.
