The Marine Institute of Memorial University will launch a complete prohibition of on-campus smoking Aug. 1, as Newfoundland and Labrador's only university phases in a stricter no-smoking policy.

As of Sunday, smoking will also be banned in all doorways of campus buildings in St. John's and Corner Brook.

"During the public consultations earlier this spring, all the participants agreed smoking should be moved away from doorways," Sheila Miller, director of Memorial's Department of Health and Safety, said in a statement posted on the university's website.

"The main reason being cited was the need to lessen the exposure to non-smokers of second- hand smoke."

There will be no designated smoking areas at the Marine Institute, which has offices, labs and classrooms at a campus on Ridge Road in Pippy Park in St. John's.

Designated smoking areas at the main campus in St. John's and at the Grenfell campus in Corner Brook will be reduced to one each in August 2012. They will be phased out altogether in August 2013.
