Marine Atlantic's ferry service between Argentia, Newfoundland and North Sydney, Nova Scotia has been cancelled until at least July 3 because of mechanical problems aboard the vessel Atlantic Vision.

Marine Atlantic spokesperson Darrell Mercer said that a problem with the starboard gearbox has kept the Atlantic Vision tied to the wharf in North Sydney since Monday evening.

With the Canada Day holiday weekend ahead, and the summer tourism season heating up, Mercer said having the Argentia ferry out of service now is bad timing.

"As we move into our busy summer season, it makes it especially challenging when we've got increased traffic volumes," admitted Mercer. "We're hoping this delay, this mechanical issue, will be rectified as quickly as possible so we can have all our vessels up and running again."

Mercer added it wasn't possible to move a ferry from Port aux Basques to Argentia for the run.

"If we tried to put another vessel on that service, we would cause a significant impact to our entire schedule," explained Mercer. "So at this point in time, it's not possible to put another vessel on that service."

Mercer said Marine Atlantic officials have contacted the passengers affected by the Argentia cancellations, and they have been rebooked with free passage on the Marine Atlantic ferries from Port aux Basques to North Sydney.

Mercer added that the company hopes to have an update on what's happening with the Atlantic Vision on Friday.

He recommended that any passengers with questions check the company's website or call Marine Atlantic's toll-free number, 1-800-341-7981.
