A manslaughter charge against a man in central Newfoundland has been dropped.

Ivan Curtis King, 58, was charged in connection with the death of Winston Hunt, 57.

Police were called to a fight at Hunt's home in Trinity, Bonavista Bay, in January 2012. When they arrived, they found the homeowner dead on the floor.

At the time, Ian Parsons told CBC News that he was drinking heavily with King and Hunt when a fight broke out.

At King's preliminary inquiry, information came to light that Hunt had a long history of serious heart trouble, and that he died from a massive heart attack.

But a judge ruled that there was enough evidence to go to trial.

A trial date was supposed to be set on Tuesday morning, but the charge was instead withdrawn.

Crown Attorney Tina Walsh said after reviewing the evidence from the preliminary inquiry, they determined that it wasn't likely they would get a conviction.
