A man's threat to harm himself in Paradise Saturday night ended with a physical confrontation and arrest.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to a report of a man threatening to hurt himself with a knife around 9 p.m.
While police were bringing the man to get medical assistance, he fled. A physical altercation ensued — which resulted in charges of assault on a peace officer, assault with a weapon, resisting arrest and obstructing a police officer.
The man, 42, was taken to hospital for an examination and was held for a court appearance Sunday morning.
Hours later, the RNC received a report that a man was carrying bear spray on George Street.
The police located the man, 20, and found him to be in possession of bear spray.
Officers also discovered he was in possession of a prohibited weapon.
He faces two charges, including possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.
He is expected to appear in provincial court Sunday morning.
