A man in his fifties is dead after an SUV crashed into three construction workers on the Outer Ring Road near Thorburn Road in St. John's Tuesday afternoon.

The two other men were in serious condition, according to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

CBC News has learned that the man who was killed was an employee of the provincial department of transportation. He was doing work on the highway at the time.

The SUV was travelling east on the Outer Ring Road in the rain when police suspect the driver lost control. Police said the adult male wasn't injured, but was quite shaken by the accident. The vehicle is now slated for a full mechanical inspection.

Both the east and westbound lanes of the highway were closed for nearly eight hours as the RNC continued to investigate the cause. The road reopened just before 9 p.m.
