A 27-year-old man is in police custody after he barricaded himself in a house on Thorburn Road in St. John's on Monday.

The armed standoff started late in the morning and ended peacefully around 1 p.m.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary surrounded the home with members of its patrol services and criminal investigation division, crisis negotiators, and police dogs.

While police talked to the man, traffic near the house was diverted, which shut down a section of Thorburn Road for more than an hour.

After the man surrendered, police removed two guns from the house. They said no one was hurt in the standoff and no shots were fired.
