Sofyan Boalag, 33, has been charged with a sexual assaulting a woman.

He's accused of using a knife and choking the woman during a vicious Dec. 9 attack in the downtown area.

But the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating whether Boalag could be connected to four other incidents.

He is also charged with possessing property belonging to another person.

Boalag's girlfriend present in courtroom

Sofyan Boalag's girlfriend held rosary beads throughout Friday's hearing.

She sobbed uncontrollably when Judge Pamela Goulding denied Boalag bail.

Boalag tried to console the woman, but he was quickly handcuffed and taken from the courtroom.
