A man, 24, from Spaniard's Bay is dead and another man is in hospital in St. John's with serious injuries following a head-on collision this morning on the Veterans Memorial Highway near Harbour Grace.

The man was killed after a blue Hyundai Tiburon and a burgundy Chevrolet Impala collided near an area known as Danny's Lookout shortly before 8 a.m.

Raymond Verge, the chief of the Harbour Grace fire department, said when he arrived on the scene, one of the vehicles was on fire.

"We immediately went to work with our extracation gear, focused on the most injured first," said Verge.

"However, we saw that it was going to be very labour intensive. He was trapped, he was well trapped into that machine. It wasn't just a matter of making a few cuts."

Verge said the young man died after being transported to hospital in Carbonear. The other driver was taken to hospital in St. John's.

Verge added that witnesses told him one vehicle drifted over the centre line.

"Based on the damage to the vehicle they had to have been doing the speed limit, every bit of it, perhaps more," said Verge.

Verge said that he believed the deceased was travelling to school in Carbonear.

That section of the highway opened around noon.

RCMP are investigating the incident.
