A youth is being charged with assault with a weapon after an incident early Thursday morning on Memorial University's main campus in St. John's.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said a 17-year-old male hit a campus enforcement officer with a piece of lumber while he was trying to detain the teen.

The incident happened before 2 a.m.

The officer was not injured, the RNC said.

The youth was released from custody and told to appear in court at a later date.
