Newfoundland Power says overhead line damage caused thousands of people in parts of St. John's and Mount Pearl to wake up in the dark Thursday.

The outage knocked power out for several hours for about 3,000 customers, and knocked out traffic lights on several of the busiest intersections on the Northeast Avalon.

The intersections included one on Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive, which commuters from the Southern Shore frequently use.

The power went out around 3:30 a.m.

Power was gradually restored before all areas were brought back online.
