Liberal Scott Reid has won the byelection for St. George's-Stephenville East, the seat that was held by former cabinet minister Joan Shea in western Newfoundland.
Elections Newfoundland and Labrador results for St. George's-Stephenville East show Reid had 2,211 votes; PC candidate Wally Childs had 948 votes; and NDP Bernice Hancock got 579 votes.
"It's a humbling experience I guess to... run for a position and to have such overwhelming support," Reid told reporters at Liberal headquarters after his win.
"I'm really happy and really humbled by the support that I've received tonight."
Tuesday's byelection was called after Joan Shea, a former front-bench minister in the Tory government as well as a former government house leader, retired from politics in June.
Shea had held the seat since 2003.
In the 2011 election, Shea won the seat with 49 per cent of the vote.
Reid led as successive polls were reported through the night, and coasted to victory with a wide margin over his competitors.
His victory returns the seat to the Liberal camp for the first time in 11 years. Former Liberal cabinet minister Kevin Aylward had represented the district between 1985 and 2003.
