John Hickey, the minister who represents Labrador Affairs in the Newfoundland and Labrador cabinet for two terms, is stepping down from politics.
Hickey has been the MHA for the Lake Melville district since 2003, when the Progressive Conservatives formed the government.
Hickey, a former mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, held the Labrador Affairs portfolio under premiers Danny Williams and Kathy Dunderdale.
Known as a boisterous defender of Labrador issues and a vocal member of the government bench in the legislature, Hickey told CBC News on Wednesday he had only planned to serve for eight years, and never had intended to seek a third term in office.
Hickey said he will now retire to Labrador, and will be able to spend more time with his family.
The next provincial election will be held on Oct. 11.
