A man who owes more than $160,000 in outstanding fines was released from custody after a brief court appearance Sunday morning.

Bradley O'Toole, 30, was arrested late Saturday on Dillon Crescent, in the Shea Heights area of St. John's.

Police say they pulled over a vehicle shortly before 10:30 p.m., and found that the man behind the wheel was suspended from driving.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered he owed more than $160,000 in fines; $162,641.46, to be exact. It's believed most of the fines relate to previous convictions involving contraband tobacco.

The vehicle was seized and impounded, while the driver was later identified as O'Toole.

He was held in custody at the lockup in downtown St. John's, until his appearance in provincial court Sunday morning.

Judge Pamela Goulding released O'Toole on several conditions.

He's due back in court June 5.
