Police in St. John's are investigating an unusual fire that left a woman homeless on Sunday, and which may have also involved a burglary.
The woman was out of town when the fire started at her home on George's Pond Place, a sparsely populated area off Blackmarsh Road.
The woman's cat died in the fire, and family members told CBC News that several items are missing from her home.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said the fire caused extensive damage to the home.
The fire caused heavy damage to a bedroom in particular.
The RNC is investigating the fire, as well as whether there had been a break-in at the property.
Investigators are looking for potential witnesses who may have been in the area of Redmond's Road and Blackmarsh Road around 8 a.m. on Sunday.
