In St. John's, the Stanley Cup falleth over
The Stanley Cup took an unexpected tumble in St. John's Tuesday, when it toppled over and fell off a table during a photo op with champion player Michael Ryder.
Ryder had just hoisted the Stanley Cup on top of a table set up on the roof of a posh St. John's restaurant, at a media event attended by dignitaries including Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale.
Ryder, who was about to leave St. John's to bring the Cup to his hometown of Bonavista, joined others in chuckling at the incident.
"First ding today," someone called out instantly as Ryder and a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer jumped to grab the trophy and put it aright.
Ryder, with an arm outstretched and grabbing the Cup, then posed for photographs.
"It won't blow away," he quipped.
Ryder, a former Boston Bruin who has since signed with the Dallas Stars, enjoys the privilege of being able to take the Stanley Cup to his hometown.
