Two men from central Newfoundland are paying the price for illegally catching salmon, with one given house arrest.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans said that Campbellton residents Greg Hancott and Rick Elliott have both been banned from recreational fishing and being within 50 metres of inland waters anywhere in Canada for the next five years.
Both were convicted of jigging salmon instead of using a fly, and of catching fish within 75 feet, or 23 metres, downstream of a fishway.
Hancott was put under house arrest for 30 days, and will then have to undergo probation for 18 months. He has also been ordered to pay back a fine of $1,200 that dates back to 1999.
Elliott was fined $3,000.
