'I'm innocent,' accused attacker says outside court
Rodney Deniro, a St. John's man accused of a violent assault that put a woman in hospital, told reporters Monday that he didn't do it.
"Good day. All I can say is that I'm innocent," Deniro, 42, said he was escorted to an appearance at provincial court in downtown St. John's.
Deniro is charged with aggravated assault, uttering threats and assault, and is accused of using a shoe, a pellet gun and a knife in the attack.
When the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary arrived at a home on Guzzwell Drive, off Macdonald Drive, Deniro is alleged to have resisted arrest.
Deniro has a lengthy criminal record, with his last conviction in 2012. He was convicted in 2005 of arson.
Deniro is expected to appear in provincial court again on Tuesday for a bail hearing.
