A house in the central Newfoundland town of Springdale caught fire early Monday morning.

The volunteer fire department was called to the scene on Elm Street just before 8am

According to the RCMP, there were people inside the home at the time of the fire, but they were able to get out safely.

The house — which is still standing — sustained heavy damage as a result of the blaze. 

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
