About 20 people from Hopedale headed to Makkovik Wednesday after learning that the RCMP had scaled back its search for Jake Basto.
Basto, 18, has been missing since early Saturday morning when he went for a walk. He is originally from Hopedale.
The RCMP said Wednesday they were reducing the effort after aerial, ground and water searches failed to yield any sign of the teen.
"It's disappointing that it had to come to that, but then again there's not much else we can do about it, I guess. And that's why our group of boys from Hopedale went and done what they did," said Maggie Jararuse, whose husband is part of the search party.
"Our boys here decided that they were going to get a group together and travel by speed boat. It just shows that our Hopedale people ... how fast they can get together and just go to wherever they're needed," she said.
Basto's family said he was looking forward to attending the College of the North Atlantic in Happy Valley-Goose Bay in September.
