High winds, snow wreaking havoc in Newfoundland
Police and transportation officials are warning drivers to stay off some roads, and to exercise caution on others as a result of very high winds and blowing snow across Newfoundland.
Visibility was reduced to near zero at times from Corner Brook to Stephenville, and winds gusting up to 180 km/h were forecast for the Wreckhouse area.
The bad weather has also led to Marine Atlantic cancelling both the morning and night ferry sailings from Port aux Basques and from North Sydney.
There have also been cancellations and delays at St. John's International Airport, and a number of local power outages in the northern, western, central and southern sections of the island.
In Labrador, Environment Canada issued a number of weather warnings, including blowing storm and wind warnings. The road from Lodge Bay to Red Bay was closed as of 11 a.m.
