Heavy truck traffic again permitted on Placentia bridge
Province lifts weight restrictions after short-term repairs; some further closures still expected
Weight restrictions are no longer in place on the Placentia lift bridge, but that doesn't mean the repair job on the aging transportation link is finished.
The Department of Transportation and Works says components of the bridge will be replaced between now and the end of the year.
Because of that work, the bridge will be closed to marine traffic during November.
In addition, the department says the bridge will occasionally close to vehicles.
The government has called tenders for construction of a new bridge, but that work is expected to take several years.
In Feburary, government officials restricted heavier vehicles from crossing the existing bridge after an inspection revealed serious structural problems.
