He may not have been impaired, but still wound up in jail
A man pulled over on suspicion of impaired driving Monday night avoided that charge, but wound up in the lockup all the same.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary received a tip around 8:20 p.m. of a possible impaired driver on Columbus Drive. Police located the vehicle on Blackmarsh Road.
While the driver wasn't charged with being impaired, he was found to have numerous other problems.
The 71-year-old had been suspended from driving, and had racked up more than $38,000 in unpaid fines.
As well, he was driving a vehicle that wasn't registered, he didn't have insurance, and the vehicle had false stickers on it.
Police put the man in the lockup for the night.
The vehicle was impounded.
