Happy Valley-Goose Bay fires intentionally set
Fires estimated to be 10 hectares
Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP say two fires that started on the edge of town on Tuesday night were intentionally set.
A 19-year-old man from Sheshatshiu, who was lost, lit two separate fires to keep warm.
Officials said they were alerted to the fires shortly after 10 p.m. At the same time, the man called them for assistance.
A search and rescue team found him intoxicated near one of the fires.
The man will appear in provincial court Wednesday afternoon, where he faces a number of charges, including possession of stolen property.
Natural Resources officials were on scene Wednesday morning with a water bomber. Both fires are contained, although 16 ground crewmembers remain at the site, putting out hot spots.
A water bomber and helicopter continue to douse flare ups.
