The RCMP in Ferryland says a woman was taken to hospital in St. John's after being injured from a gunshot wound on Saturday afternoon.

Officers responded to the report at a residence in St. Mary's around 4:30 p.m.

The woman was taken to the Health Sciences Centre with what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Sources told CBC News it's believed the woman was injured when a stray bullet passed through a wall and struck her.

Unconfirmed reports said the firearm was discharged by her husband, who was firing the gun to kill a dog that bit someone.

The details have not been confirmed by the RCMP, and the police investigation is ongoing.
