The international students at Memorial University's campus in Corner Brook will be getting some unexpected holiday cheer on Tuesday.

Shanda Williams, international student co-ordinator at Grenfell, says some students are from as far away as Africa.

Williams said the expense of flying home for the holidays is too much of a burden for many of the international students.

A local church, Westside Tabernacle, decided to donate hampers of gifts and snacks to help the dozen students enjoy Christmas in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Williams said the gesture will be greatly appreciated.

"Unbeknownst to a lot of them, this is going to be a very big surprise," Williams said.

"They are not really expecting this sort of thing, so we're going to let them know that the church has sponsored this event."

She hopes they will be able to arrange a gesture of thanks for the church.

"Just to let them know that we really appreciate everything that they are doing for us, and everything that they are doing for these students," Williams said.

There will be toys included with the gifts, because the international group includes a family with three children.
