Gregory Turner, a man who was once charged with murder, has been sentenced to 12 months in jail for a brutal assault against a woman.
Turner, 35, had originally been charged with sexual and aggravated assault, but the sexual assault charge was dropped prior to Monday's sentencing at provincial court in St. John's.
Due to time already served, Turner will only have to serve an additional six days.
Turner apologized to his victim and her family during a sentencing hearing.
Turner also said he's anxious to turn his life around.
Turner has a long criminal record, much of it from earlier years.
Sixteen years ago, Turner was charged with the murder of a former school teacher in Lawn, but a jury found him not guilty.
