Gregory James Turner, who is charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm, will find out on Monday if he will get bail.
Turner, 35, has been in custody since being arrested earlier this month.
He made an appearance in provincial court on Wednesday.
Turner is accused of threatening to kill the same woman in a disturbance that occurred in a residence in the west end of St. John's on Nov 2.
The victim was taken to hospital, treated, and released.
Turner has a 14-page criminal record, but does not have any prior convictions for sex offences.
In the mid 1990s, Turner was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of his neighbour.
Turner was found not guilty of that crime in 2001.
