A family doctor from central Newfoundland has received a prestigious award that holds personal significance.

The Newfoundland and Labrador College of Family Physicians has given Jared Butler of Grand Falls-Windsor its Award of Excellence.

Besides his family practice, Butler is chief of family medicine for Central Health.

The award recognizes Butler's work, in particular, in palliative care.

Butler said he was inspired to get involved in that field, after his father was diagnosed with kidney cancer.

"Thankfully, you know, my mom, my sister, and our entire family had a lot of support from the physicians and nurses at Central Health," said Butler.

"They really took care of my dad. And I just saw the impact that had on our family, and how grateful we were for all the great care that he received."

Coincidentally, Butler received his award on the anniversary of his father's death.
