The first building that will be part of the Goose Bay Town Centre is officially in the works after years of planning, building and public speculation.

The centre is planned to create a new downtown hub for the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, providing commercial and retail space, as well as residential units for 900 occupants.

Developer Lyman Langille said he's heard his share of doubts over the proposed centre. 

"A lot of people were suspect ... is the town centre actually going to happen, or is it just another guy coming to Labrador proposing to do something, and then not do anything — but we are, it's real now," said Langille.

Langille hopes this first building will encourage other buyers to build on the land.  

He said the site is open to all kinds of retailers. A hotel has signed on to build, although Langille would not reveal which one.  

"Goose Bay's ready to grow, and the town centre's going to help Goose Bay grow."

The Nunatsiavut Group of Companies (NGC) is the centre's first buyer.

NGC plans to build an $8-million three-storey, 30,000 square-foot structure.

President James Thorbourne hopes the company can lease the rest of the space, encompassing two and a half floors.

"We think the world is coming here to do work, and we want to provide Class A office space to people that are looking for it," said Thorbourne.

Building the development, which is technically still called Phase 0, will move forward once the snow clears and roads can be paved. 

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has said there shouldn't be any more delays.
