George Street cameras net 1st conviction
The first person to be caught by a system of surveillance cameras on George Street, the strip of clubs in downtown St. John's, has been convicted.
Michael Patrick Collins attacked another man in October 2011, a few months after the closed-circuit system was installed in the area.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has said the cameras have provided a strong deterrent.
Provincial court judge Pamela Goulding on Monday convicted Collins of assault causing bodily harm.
Collins was given 12 months of house arrest, as well as three years' probation.
He is also restricted from owning a firearm for 10 years.
