One person was sent to hospital and more than half a dozen vehicles were damaged Friday evening, after what witnesses call a chain-reaction event due to a large pothole on a St. John's highway.
The incident occurred on Pitts Memorial Drive, west of Ruth Avenue, near the exit to Donovan's Industrial Park.
A large pothole opened up on a section of patch and grind work, during a time when it was raining with heavy fog.
Witnesses said several drivers stopped very quickly when they spotted the pothole, causing one vehicle to leave the road and overturn.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said numerous vehicles reportedly received damage to tires and rims.
Road crews had posted signs, warning drivers about the conditions of the road.
Workers with the Department of Transportation and Works rushed to the area following the incident, to fill in the pothole.
