Police are investigating a fatal accident on the Trans Canada Highway in Terra Nova National Park early this morning.
A 23-year-old man from Gander died at the scene.
According to the RCMP, the man was driving a Honda Civic when it crossed the centre line on the and clipped a tractor-trailer that was heading in the opposite direction. The car ended up in the eastbound ditch.
The accident happened when it was still dark, shortly after 4:30 a.m., about two kilometres west of Charlottetown.
The Trans-Canada Highway was only open to one lane of traffic for several hours after the accident, causing short delays. It has since reopened.
The 51-year-old driver of the transport truck was taken to hospital in Clarenville for observation, with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
RCMP reconstructed what happened based on skid marks, but say they may never know what made the driver cross the line.
