Fraudster scams businesses in Stephenville
RCMP say a number of businesses in Stephenville have been recently scammed by a man who claimed they owed him money.
Police said a hotel, gas station and a hardware store gave payments to a man who wasn't owed any money.
Cst. Burns Anderson said McDonald's restaurant has also come forward.
"They phoned [again] in the middle of the night claiming that they had done some work. I believe in that case they said they had been cleaning the grease traps, that they were owed $300," Anderson said.
"The employee working the overnight shift wasn't sure if it was legitimate or not, but took the person on their word I guess. These guys can be pretty convincing."
Anderson said one of two suspects is in custody.
He was scheduled for an appearance in provincial court on Wednesday afternoon.
