An employee who worked with the Department of Justice, until he was recently laid off, is concerned for people's safety.
Rick Whitten, who was a manager at the youth corrections facility in Whitbourne, said the reduction in sheriff's officers and Crown prosecutors will have more of an impact than the Newfoundland and Labrador government thinks.
"I think that the services to victims is going to be less and less," Whitten said. "I think the risk to employees in the department of justice who provide those services is going to be greater, and at the end of the day, I don't know what the picture is going to look like. "I don't know what the plans are of government, but right now, at this point in time — it looks pretty grim."
Whitten was one of the 147 employees in the Department of Justice who lost their jobs after the provincial budget was announced last week.
