RCMP said Monday that a weekend accident in the recreational food fishery off Bonavista cost a man his life.
Police said they were called Saturday with a report that a man, 51, had fallen overboard.
In a statement, RCMP said the man could not be revived despite ongoing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
"The man had not been wearing a personal flotation device at the time of the incident," the statement said.
Police did not release details about his name or where he lived.
The death comes just after the Newfoundland Federation of Hunters and Anglers said the length of the summer recreational fishery should be extended, to help make it safer.
Saturday was the first day of the summer food fishery, which runs until Aug. 11. The recreational fishery will open again in the fall for a limited time.
