The Department of Transportation and Works said the ferry, with the assistance of an ice breaker, managed to break through the ice and made two trips on Wednesday between Fogo Island, Change Islands and Farewell.

Government said the Winsor will tie up at Fogo Island when it arrives back this afternoon. Officials will assess ice conditions on Thursday morning and make a decision whether ferry crossings will continue.

The Winsor was tied up since last Thursday, stranding residents and ceasing vehicle traffic.

The provincial government resumed air service between the island and Gander on Tuesday, after several days of poor weather and dense fog had grounded a fixed-wing and a chopper.
