Fire in Lourdes destroys home, family escapes
A couple, their 15-year-old son and the family dog escaped through a window from their burning home on the Port au Port Peninsula early Thursday, shortly before the house was completely destroyed.
Police said the family was alerted by smoke detectors, and went to a neighbour's house to call for help.
The Lourdes Regional Fire Department responded to the call shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday.
The Bay St. George RCMP said the homeowners explained there was fire in the furnace room of the home.
Officials said the house is a total loss, estimated at $300,000.
No one was injured in the blaze.
Police were holding the scene on Thursday for an examiner to start an investigation.
