An apartment complex being developed in Pouch Cove caught fire Friday morning.
Firefighters were on the scene of the fire on Main Road, which was reported shortly before 8:30 a.m.
The central units of the complex appear to have sustained the most damage.
Pouch Cove Mayor Joedy Wall said firefighters from the community's volunteer fire department were assisted by crews from Torbay and St. John's.
According to Wall, the damage to the complex could have been much worse.
"The fire was in the centre core of the building, and from what I've been told by the firefighters on scene, the fire walls that were built kept the fire from spreading to the other units," he said.
Wall said the private development was being constructed to house senior citizens.
There was no one in the building at the time of the fire.
No injuries were reported, and the extent of the damage is not yet known.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
