Fire gutted a bungalow on New Harbour Road in Spaniard's Bay Monday night, leaving an older couple without a place to live.

The Canadian Red Cross said the man and woman, who are both in their 80s, are staying for now with relatives in the community.

The organization said there were no serious injuries, but the man was checked for smoke inhalation at the health centre in Bay Roberts.

The volunteer department from Bay Roberts responded to the call around 9 p.m.

The volunteer brigade in Spaniard's Bay is still not up and running after a controversy over allegations of sexual harassment and mistreatment.

The Bay Roberts brigade were already at the fire hall for training when the call came in.

It appears that the fire started in a bedroom, although the cause is still under investigation.
