Newfoundland and Labrador’s fisheries union has lost one of its most dedicated members.
Ben Baker was a longtime negotiator with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union.
He died early Tuesday morning at the age of 57, after struggling with several health issues.
"If you wanted to define straight shooter, you'd say to somebody follow Ben Baker around. He was a guy with a heart of gold," said FFAW president Earle McCurdy.
"I mean, he would really go the extra mile to help somebody and I guess at the end of the day the spirit was willing and the flesh was weak," he said.
Baker had diabetes and was on dialysis.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 at Bethany United Church in Carbonear.
