Young female hockey players from across Atlantic Canada are in Mount Pearl this weekend for the Atlantic Bantam Triple A Invitational tournament.

The event started on Thursday at the Glacier Arena, and fans cheered from the stands as players were introduced.

Terry French, the minister of tourism, culture and recreation, said this kind of tournament is great for the province.

"From a tourism perspective, you've got people from all over Atlantic Canada here - and you know Newfoundland and Labrador are great ambassadors," French said.

"Female hockey is a sport that struggled. One of the target areas that we've tried as a government to touch are young women because young women in particular fall off the recreation and sport activities when they get to thirteen, fourteen and fifteen years old."

French said these athletes are role models for other young women in Atlantic Canada.

"It's great to see this group of young women here promoting the sport and promoting active living for young women," French added.

The event will wrap up with a championship game at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
