A man died while trying to rescue his daughter in waters just off Newfoundland's Port au Port Peninsula.

A father died Monday after trying to save his daughter in rough waters off Cape St. George.

RCMP said the man, 36, drowned Monday while trying to help the teenager, who had been swimming in water off Cape St. George.

She had been swimming with friends when she was caught in rough waves and the current.

Police said the father tried to reach out to her from the rocks on the shoreline but was swept into the ocean. He was later pronounced dead at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville.

Another man from the community was able to rescue the teen.
