Crews launched a fresh attack Wednesday on a fire outside St. John's that had temporarily forced the evacuation of campers as well as some industrial workers.

Authorities also lifted an evacuation alert that had remained in place overnight connected to a fire near Cochrane Pond Park, just a few kilometres south of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The fire had proved to be difficult on Tuesday night, roaring back out of control after having been significantly knocked down earlier in the evening.

An evacuation order for the park — as well as the nearby Country Ribbon chicken farm — was lifted around 6 p.m.

New crews were on the scene around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, with a helicopter helping the effort.

If conditions warrant, a water bomber will be brought in from Gander.

There are currently nine forest fires burning on the island and two in Labrador.
