An Olympic medallist is in Corner Brook this weekend to skate in a season-end ice show with the local figure skating club.
Elvis Stojko, a two-time Olympic silver medallist, is headlining the Silver Blades skating showcase on Saturday night.
Stojko recently wrapped up a musical Broadway stint in Chicago, but said he always enjoys taking part in smaller skating shows with local groups.
"This reminds me of how I started with the smaller clubs and so forth," he said.
"For me, I always liked doing these club shows because the fans are enthusiastic, the kids are awesome, and in a way you're giving back to the grassroots kind of where we all started from."
Stojko said he takes part in a few smaller showcases throughout the year between his larger projects, on and off the ice.
Alexandra Young, a figure skater from Corner Brook who is training in Montreal, will share the ice with Stojko in the showcase.
Young said she's excited to be back home to skate in front of the local fans.
"Skating away, I always miss skating at home here with the skaters at the club," she said.
"I just love going home to see everyone, and do the show here, and skate in front of a home crowd."
The performance starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook.
Stojko will also skate on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium in Grand Falls-Windsor.
