Drowning in Gambo brings tragic end to outing
RCMP taking steps to notify victim's family outside country
RCMP reported Monday that a young man drowned after he and his friends were enjoying themselves at a swimming hole near Gambo.
Police said the man, 23, was enjoying an outing with friends at Mint Brook on Friday evening when he went swimming and then suddenly went underwater.
An official at Memorial University initially said the man was an international student at the institution, but later advised that information could not be confirmed.
The RCMP's Glovertown detachment said it has sent a request outside the country to notify the victim's family.
Police said the man's friends pulled him out of the water, and that CPR was attempted on the scene.
Unfortunately, their efforts and subsequent medical interventions in an ambulance and at the hospital in Gander could not revive him.
