Donations for organization following Mud Immortal fallout

Support for the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador has rolled in from other groups after a delay in receiving fundraising promised from the Mud Immortal challenge.

Support for the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador has rolled in from other groups after a delay in receiving fundraising promised from the Mud Immortal challenge.

Participants in the event complained that the challenge was not properly organized, and event staff was not properly prepared to receive the 5,000 people who showed up at Butter Pot Park on Sept. 21 to compete.

Attendees quickly took to social media to complain, which ranged from flimsy obstacles to a lack of provided drinking water.

Shirley Lucas, the executive director of the Alzheimer Society, said the organizer intended to offer monies raised from bag checks and parking to the organization.

However, the group has yet to see any of the promised funds.

Lucas said other companies and individuals have been coming forward to offer donations after discovering that the money from the challenge had yet to be offered up.

"A lot of them are coming forward and saying that they're concerned in terms of us not getting funds on the day of the event, and they just wanted to make a difference because they considered our cause worthwhile," she said.

"We're seeing, actually, a number of people who had wanted to make a donation on that day (of the event) are making a donation to us directly."

Bad press?

Lucas is concerned that people might think the organization was directly involved with the organizing of the event.

"Lots of businesses do third party events for us all the time, and it's the first time we've encountered a challenge of this nature," she said.

"My interpretation is the public has seen us, based on the calls that I've been getting from them, [and] are concerned that our society was associated with it, but one would hope that people are aware that this was a third party event — that we didn't organize the event ourselves."

Lucas said despite the delay, the event organizer has assured her the donations that were promised are on the way.

"I have been in contact with the organizer — I actually met with him yesterday — and they have made an indication that next week they will make a donation to us," Lucas said.

Mud truffle money

One chocolate company in downtown St. John's has gone so far as to create a "Mud Immoral" truffle, and donate the proceeds to the Alzheimer Society.

Brent Smith, owner of the Newfoundland Chocolate Company, said his shop has made about 500 truffles, and will be donating all of the money made from selling the treats to the organization.

According to Smith, employees from the shop had a firsthand experience with Mud Immortal, and that's where the inspiration first came in.

"We had a team that was in the event, and they came back and they were talking about it — as everybody else was — and there was a few jokes going around the staff room," he said.

Smith said he doesn't want to see a charity burdened by an event that wasn't actually organized by them.

"As a charity, they're just hoping for the donation to help them with their program," he said. "It didn't come through on event day, so let's see if as a community we can help get them to where they were expecting."
