RCMP in eastern Newfoundland arrested a man late Sunday night while investigating a complaint that he may have beaten his dog to death.

The Whitbourne detachment of the RCMP was told around 11 p.m. that a New Harbour man had killed his own dog.

Residents complained about noise coming from the home.

When officers arrived the dog was dead, and it appeared that it had been beaten to death.

The suspect, 37, was taken into custody and spent the night in the lockup. The unnamed man is scheduled to appear in provincial court on Nov. 5 in Harbour Grace.

RCMP said the man faces a criminal charge for wilfully killing an animal without lawful cause.
