Penalties proved to be the undoing for the St. John's IceCaps on Saturday, as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Albany Devils.

The loss evened the best-of-five Eastern Conference AHL quarterfinal series at a game apiece.

St. John's won the opener Friday night, scoring late in the third to snatch a 2-1 victory.

Brenden Kitchon scored both goals for St. John's on Saturday. But Albany's three powerplay markers were the difference.

The IceCaps peppered Devils' goaltender Keith Kinkaid with 20 shots in the third period alone, but could not solve the game's first star.

St. John's finished with 30 shots in total on the night.

The series now shifts to St. John's for the rest of the series.

The pivotal Game 3 is set for Wednesday night at Mile One Centre. Game 4 goes Friday night with Game 5, if necessary, on Saturday.
