The weather co-operated this weekend with plans to release massive amounts of water from the dam at Deer Lake Power, with residents escaping unscathed from a flood warning.

Managers at the Kruger-owned dam released water from three gates on Friday to deal with water levels that had risen so higher that a reservoir was overflowing.

Deer Lake Mayor Dean Ball said water levels receded about 10 cm over the course of the weekend.

He said rains that had been causing concerns ended, and cooler temperatures also helped.

The three floodgates at the main dam will remain open for another three or four days as a precaution, and town officials will continue to monitor water levels.
